One of the changes that took effect on Royal Assent of Bill C-6, an Act to amend the Citizenship Act and make consequential amendments to another Act removed the requirement to be 18 years old in order to apply for a grant of citizenship under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act.
To further facilitate access to Canadian citizenship for minors, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced lowering the processing fees for minors applying under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act, from $530 to $100.
The modification ensures that there is no difference in the fee to be paid by minor applicants for a grant of citizenship, irrespective of whether they have a Canadian parent, are applying alongside a permanent resident parent, or are applying on their own behalf.
